HOW TO WRITE AN EFFECTIVE AND SUCCESSFUL SUMMARY

HOW TO WRITE AN EFFECTIVE AND SUCCESSFUL SUMMARY

How to Write an Effective and Successful SummaryWhat a summary is“summary is a short statement that gives only the main points ofsomething, not the details.” (Oxford dvanced Learner’s Dictionary, 8th Edition) Tosummarize a text is to condense it into a distillation and to do so in your own words. When you write a summary, you are demonstrating your understanding of the textand communicating it to your readers who have not read or seen the original text. Itis not necessary to include every detail of the text. Only those elements which youthink are most important – the main idea – and its essential supporting points shouldbe extracted from the original text. When and how to summarizeThere are many instances in which you have to write a summary. You maysummarize some interesting news that you read or you may summarize a lesson fora classmate who has been sick and missed the class. You may also be assigned towrite a summary of a reading. Writing an effective summary is a requisite skill forany educated person. What is an effective summary? An effective summary should be concise and coherent. You have to includeall of the essential information presented in a clear and well-organized way in orderthat your readers can understand without reading the original source. An effective summary must be independent. When you write a summary, donot imitate the author of the text you are writing about. Instead, you are expected touse your own words to express your understanding of what you have read. In otherwords, your summary is your interpretation of the author’s points or ideas. However, you should be careful not to go beyond the main points by introducingcomments or criticisms of your own.To write an effective summary you need to read and reread the original textto get its main points and note them down in a list. You should look for words or

what you might be in for in the relationship. Bottom line: learn aboutyour partner’s health and your partner’s family’s health, and answerhonestly and completely the questions that are asked of you aboutyour health and that of your family. Put it all on the table so that youboth go into the relationship with your eyes wide open.9Mental HealthThis type of health challenge is even more difficult. Here is an exampleof a real-life shocker that I encountered: a young couple began livingtogether and everything was great for the first few years. Suddenly, shebegan to behave a little out of character. She went on wild shoppingsprees to the United States and had casual sexual relations with strangers. She developed financial problems. She became depressed. Shewent through mood swings, and suddenly there were violent episodes. Her partner was in shock—what was happening to their relationship? The answer: she had stopped taking her antidepressant medication. He had no idea that she had been taking medication because she hadkept her illness a secret. Was that fair to him? I don’t think so. As aresult, he was unwilling to work with her to restore some stability toher life and the relationship ended. In the relationships that lawyers see going sour, mental health issues often loom large. I was involved in a case in which one partnersuffered from obsessive compulsive disorder (ocd), which meant that, for her, non-stop cleaning of their home was absolutely necessary. Theextent of her problem was not obvious until they were living togetherfor several months, but gradually it became worse and worse. He noticed when he came home from work that their home now reeked ofbleach. Suddenly, newspapers were forbidden in the house becausethey contained “germs.” Similarly, no shoes were allowed in the house, and then no people were allowed in the house. Furniture was covered

In a survey of 1,256 people ages between 18 and65, men said they contributed an average of 37% of the total housework, while the women estinated theirshare to be nearly double that, at 70%. This ratio was not affected by whether the woman was working ornot. When they were asked what they thought was a fair division of labor, women with jobs felt that houseworkshould be shared equally between male and female partners. Women who did not work outside the homewrer satisfied to perform 80% - the majority of the household work – if their husbands did remaider.Reseach has shown that, if levels increase beyond these percentages, women become unhappy and anxious, and feel they are unimportant. After marriage, a woman is reported to increase her household workload by 14 hours per week, but for menthe amount is just 90 minutes. So the division of labor becomes unbalanced, as a man’s share increasesmuch less than the woman’s. It is the inequality and loss of repect, not the actual number of hours, which

LINUX BIBLE NINTH EDITIONWEB COMPANION

Linux Bible, Ninth EditionWeb CompanionAlthough the focus of the Linux Bible, 9th Edition is on Red Hat and Debian(Ubuntu) based Linux distributions, you can choose from hundreds of Linuxdistributions. You also have many ways to expand your knowledge of Linux beyondwhat is covered in the book. Use this document to expand your interactions withLinux to find other distributions and topics of interest associated with Linux andother free and open source software.Finding Linux DistributionsBecause Linux rarely comes preinstalled on a computer, you must typicallydownload a Linux distribution from the Internet before you can start using Linux. This section contains links to Linux distributions you can use with the book, as wellas to other Linux distributions that may interest you. After you have chosen and downloaded the Linux distribution image (usuallya CD, DVD, or USB image), you can burn the image to the appropriate physicalmedium using the instructions included in Appendix A of Linux Bible, 9th Edition.Getting Linux distributions for use with this bookLinux Bible, 9th Edition uses Fedora 21 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 formost of the demonstrations and exercises in the book. Using later versions of Fedoraand Red Hat Enterprise Linux should work for most cases as well.Using Ubuntu to follow along with the book will not work consistently. Themost common differences relate to package names and packaging tools, as well astechniques for managing services. On occasion, configuration files have differentnames. To download the Linux distributions that work with the book, follow theselinks: Fedora—With few exceptions, almost all of the descriptions and exercisesin the book will work on the Fedora Linux distribution. You can get thelatest version of Fedora here:

LINUX ADMINISTRATION LINUX FOR DUMMIES

LINUX ADMINISTRATION LINUX FOR DUMMIES

3Each minibook zeros in on a specific task area — such as using the Internetor running Internet servers — and then provides hands-on instructions onhow to perform a series of related tasks. You can jump right to a sectionand read about a specific task. You don’t have to read anything but the fewparagraphs or the list of steps that relate to your question. Use the Table ofContents or the Index to locate the pages relevant to your question. You can safely ignore text next to the Technical Stuff icons, as well as textin sidebars. However, if you’re the kind of person who likes to know someof the hidden details of how Linux works, then by all means, dig into theTechnical Stuff icons and the sidebars. If you are a novice to Linux, overlook the certification objective icons as youread. Only after you become comfortable with the operating system, and areconsidering authenticating your skills by taking the LPI exams, should yourevisit the book and look for these icons.Foolish AssumptionsI assume that you’re familiar with a PC — you know how to turn it on and offand you’ve dabbled with Windows. (Considering that most new PCs comepreloaded with Windows, this assumption is safe, right?) And I assume thatyou know how to use some Windows applications, such as Microsoft Office. When installing Linux on your PC, you may want to retain your Windowsinstallations. I assume that you don’t mind shrinking the Windows partition to make room for Linux. For this procedure, you can invest in a gooddisk-partitioning tool or use one of the partitioning tools included with mostLinux distributions.I also assume that you’re willing to accept the risk that when you try toinstall Linux, some things may not quite work. Problems can happen if youhave some uncommon types of hardware. If you’re afraid of ruining yoursystem, try finding a slightly older, spare Pentium PC that you can sacrifice

LINUX NEWBIE GUIDE

LINUX NEWBIE GUIDE

Windows. If you are really security-sensitive , you can use high-security tools built bycompanies that rely on the availability of the source code to design and test their security features(e.g., Kryptokom in Germany provides high security firewalls). The "security in obscurity"implemented in MS Windows has repeatedly been demonstrated to be a naive approach. Here is a quote from David Kastrup, Research Engineer, Bochum, Germany (after the "InternetWeek", http://www.techweb.com/se/directlink.cgi?INW19990329S0050):"Risk aversion is what dictates you use Linux and other open products, rather than NT. The riskswith NT are entirely out of your control, and there is nobody you could sue if anything goeswrong. Why people still believe the myth that Windows in any form offers any bit ofaccountability "more" than Linux remains a complete riddle to me."0.10 I need standards. Big software corporations (Microsoft)provide standards.Perhaps that’s what people would expect from large corporations, but the reality is ratherdifferent. Once, big companies loved inventing nuts that could be undone only by their ownservice shops. Did these nuts become standard? Hardly. They didn’t because there was no publicbenefit involved, and they couldn’t because they were patented. Luckily, now we have open andfree standards for nuts. A "propriatory standard" is such a ridiculous oxymoron that it is hard tobelieve that educated people can believe in it.An example from the computer field. The "standard" MS Word file format has changednumerous times over the recent years. This keeps happening probably for a good businessreason: as soon as other companies "reverse-engineer" the current Word format, Microsoftchanges it. There are even sub-formats (a MS "fast-save" anybody?). It is also completelyclosed--Microsoft does not publish the specifications. How can the user benefit from this in alonger term?Xavier Basora (http://www.osopinion.com/Opinions/XavierBasora/XavierBasora47.html):"... Microsoft’s standards are both proprietary and arbitrary- the stealth incompatibility of Office97 file formats with older versions of Office or the subversion of Open standards like XML withproprietary extensions that require Internet Explorer 5, MS Active server and so on, are soberreminders of what the company does to a market."
