When Oracle Database 10g is shut down, nobody can access the data in its files. An instance is a set of processes that run in a computer's memory and provide access to the many files that come together to define themselves as Oracle Database 10g.A background process supports access to a started Oracle Database 10g, playing a vital role in Oracle's database implementation. Various background processes are spawned when starting the database and each performs a handful of tasks until a database is shut down. The Control FilesThese are binary files containing information about the assortment of files that come together to support the Oracle Database 10g. They contain information that describes the names, locations, and sizes of the database files. As the Oracle Database 10g is started, the control files are read and the files described therein are opened to support the running database. The Online Redo LogsAs sessions interact with the Oracle Database 10g, the details of their activities are recorded in the online redo logs. Many think of these as the transaction logs. A

Without going into more detail, as Application Server Control is beyond the scope of this book, I hope I’ve given you just enough information to make the distinction clear between Grid Control and Application Server Control.26 Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control Implementation GuideOracle TIGHT / Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control Implementation Guide / Michael New / 149275-5 Oracle TIGHT / Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control Implementation Guide / Michael New / 149275-5Chapter 1: Overview of the Grid Control Architecture 27Agents for Grid Control, Database Control, and AS ControlNow that we are clear that Grid Control, Database Control, and Application Server Control are all distinct, you’re probably not surprised to hear that separate Agents exist for each. The Grid Control central Agent on each managed host (including OMS and OMR hosts) monitors all targets on that host and uploads target information to the SYSMAN schema in the Management Repository.NOTEIn this book, Management Agent or Agent refers to the central Grid Control Agent. The Database Control Agent, on the database host, similarly stores data in a SYSMAN schema, but this schema is local to its associated Oracle database. In contrast to both Grid Control and Database Control Agents, the Application Server Control Agent, bundled with the Oracle Application Server, only communicates real-time data internally to the Application Server Control, as there is no Repository for historical data. All three Management Agents are distinct. They run from their respective home directories—the Grid Control Agent from its own Agent home, the Database Control Agent from the database home, and the Application Server Control Agent from the Application Server home including that for the OMS.

Oracle Database 10G: A Beginner''''s Guide pdf

ORACLE DATABASE 10G: A BEGINNER''''S GUIDE PDF

Oracle Database 10g the latest offering from a software giant in northern California. Perhaps you have heard a lot ofhype about Oracle Database 10g, perhaps not. Regardless of your experience, 10g is a rich, full-featured softwareintended to revolutionize the way many companies do their database business. Database you say now there's a wordyou hear all the time! In a nutshell, a database is an electronic collection of information designed to meet a handful ofneeds: 1. Databases provide one-stop shopping for all your data storage requirements, be they in diverse areas such ashuman resources, finance, inventory, or sales and then some. The database contains any amount of data, from thesmall to the huge. Data volumes in excess of many hundreds of gigabytes are commonplace in this day and age, where a gigabyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes. 2. Databases must provide mechanisms to retrieve data quickly as applications interact with their contents. It is onething to store tax information for the 300 million citizens of a country, but it's another kettle of fish to retrieve thatdata, as required, in a short time period. 3. Databases allow the sharing of corporate data such that personnel data is shared amongst one's payroll, benefits, and pension systems. A familiar adage in the database industry is ''write once, read many." Databases are amanifestation of that saying one's name, address, and other tombstone personnel information are stored in one placeand read by as many systems requiring these details. There is a great deal of academic interest in the database industry, the theory of the relational database being foundedin relational algebra. As data is entered into and stored in the Oracle Database 10g, the relationships it has to otherdata are defined as well. This allows the assembling of required data as applications run. These relationships can bedescribed in plain English for a fictitious computer parts store as follows: Each geographical location within which the store does business is uniquely identified by a quad_id. ORACLE DATABASE 10G - AUTOMATIC SGA MEMORY MANAGEMENT

The Self-Managing Database: Automatic SGA Memory Management Page 2 The Self-Managing Database: Automatic SGA Memory Management INTRODUCTION One of the key self-management enhancements in the Oracle Database 10g is Automatic Shared (SGA) Memory Management. This functionality automates the management of shared memory used by an Oracle Database 10g instance and liberates administrators from having to manually configure the sizes of shared memory components. Besides making more effective use of available memory and thereby reducing the cost incurred of acquiring additional hardware memory resources, the Automatic Shared Memory Management feature will significantly simply Oracle database administration by introducing a more dynamic, flexible and adaptive memory management scheme. This paper introduces this functionality and illustrates its advantages. CURRENT CHALLENGES The Shared Global Area (SGA) in Oracle comprises multiple memory components a component being a pool of memory used to satisfy a particular class of memory allocation requests. Examples of memory components include the shared pool (used for allocating memory for SQL and PL/SQL execution), java pool (used for java objects and other java execution memory), buffer cache (used for caching disk blocks), etc. In past releases, the Oracle administrator was required to manually set a number of parameters for specifying different SGA component sizes, such as SHARED_POOL_SIZE, DB_CACHE_SIZE, LARGE_POOL_SIZE, and JAVA_POOL_SIZE. The task of manually adjusting the sizes of individual SGA components could pose a few challenges. It may not be easy to determine the optimal sizes of these components suitable for a given workload. Oracle9i alleviated this problem to a

copy them from one database to another, and mount them. You must export thedata dictionary (metadata) for the tablespace from the source and import it at thetarget. This feature can save a lot of time during maintenance, because it simplifiesthe process. Oracle Database 10g allows you to move data with transportabletablespaces between different platforms or operating systems.Advanced Queuing and StreamsAdvanced Queuing (AQ), first introduced in Oracle8, provides the means toasynchronously send messages from one Oracle database to another. Because mes-sages are stored in a queue in the database and sent asynchronously when a connec-tion is made, the amount of overhead and network traffic is much lower than itwould be using traditional guaranteed delivery through the two-phase commit proto-col between source and target. By storing the messages in the database, AQ providesa solution with greater recoverability than other queuing solutions that store mes-sages in filesystems.Oracle messaging adds the capability to develop and deploy a content-based publishand subscribe solution using a rules engine to determine relevant subscribing applica-tions. As new content is published to a subscriber list, the rules on the list determinewhich subscribers should receive the content. This approach means that a single listcan efficiently serve the needs of different subscriber communities. In the first release of Oracle9i, AQ added XML support and Oracle Internet Direc-tory (OID) integration. This technology is leveraged in Oracle Application Intercon-nect (OAI), which includes adapters to non-Oracle applications, messagingproducts, and databases. The second release of Oracle9i introduced Streams. Streams have three major com-ponents: log-based replication for data capture, queuing for data staging, and user-defined rules for data consumption. Oracle Database 10g includes support forchange data capture and file transfer solutions via Streams.Extraction, Transformation, LoadingOracle Warehouse Builder is a tool for the design of target data stores including datawarehouses and a metadata repository, but it also provides a frontend to building

Applied Oracle Security: Developing Secure Database and Middleware Environments- P4 doc

APPLIED ORACLE SECURITY DEVELOPING SECURE DATABASE AND MIDDLEWARE ENVIRONMENTS P4 DOC

is by no means a legal definition, as one is not required here, but suffice it to say that legal penalties can be levied for noncompliance. However, the results of illegal disclosure are often more important outside the legal domain. A publicly traded company’s reputation, branding, and public image are constantly at stake. A negative event can have disastrous effects on stock prices and the future viability of a company. The challenge for this scenario arises from several factors, among them are ensuring the timeliness of reporting the financial information, controlling access to the information, and naturally trying to guarantee that the information is accurate. Once again, this involves a must-have need to manage who gets access to the internal data and under what conditions.PrinciplesRegardless of the classification of data and the need to protect it, you can adhere to a few principles when considering a solution to a business problem and contemplating the correct level and appropriateness of security. These principles are adaptations and evolutions of those cited in Effective Oracle Database 10g Security By Design. These principles should serve as guidelines to help you drive decisions and effective postures and are echoed throughout the book. Understanding them and why they are important is essential to your understanding the complementary technologies, architectures, and best practices presented herein.Principles can serve to prove due diligence or, in some cases, negligence. Incorporating security is a delicate balance of preserving ease of use, performance, and manageability. As these factors often compete with security, it is important that you are able to justify and implement a Chapter 1: Security Blueprints and New Thinking 11balanced, prudent, and rational solution. Discounting security entirely is rarely, if ever, an option. The point is for you to be able to prove that the correct level of security is being implemented in the correct way. Doing so may assist you in preserving company brand, reputation, and viability and also in protecting your reputation and employability.Layers of SecurityYou probably know that dressing in layers of clothing is a prudent approach to staying warm in places where the weather can change quickly and dramatically. Security in layers has an analogous benefit. A removal of one layer—say, by compromise—does not expose the entire system. When you look at how to apply security, you want to look at incorporating multiple layers whenever it
