You have two branch offices using IP telephony with CallManager 2.4. To handle admissions control between the two offices over a WAN, which of the following solutions will work? • Solution A: Use a central CallManager (perhaps redundant CallManagers) with each office being a separate region. Intra-region calls can be G.711, but inter-region calls can be G.729 (unless to voice mail). Limit WAN bandwidth at each egress point and block calls that will exceed that level. • Solution B: Put a CallManager in each location and network them together using H.323 (running on a Cisco IOS gatekeeper). You can then use the zone bandwidth feature to limit the number of calls and force overflow to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). a. Solution A b. Solution B c. Either A or B d. Neither A nor B 22) VAD is a mechanism for reducing bandwidth requirements when transporting: a. Voice over IP b. Voice over Frame Relay c. Voice over ATM d. A, B, and C

Figure 2-28 RouterThe purpose of a router is to examine incoming packets (Layer 3 data), choose the best path for them through the network, and then switch them to the proper outgoing port. Routers are the most important traffic-regulating devices on large networks. expensive equipment. With the advent of new multi-service platforms (MSP), however, deploying data services over next generation SONET gains more appeal. MSPs are network elements that enable voice and data services over a converged network, concentrating multiple transmission methods and transporting them over a single pipe downstream. By combining TDM voice, ATM, Frame Relay, and IP services into one network element, MSPs reduce the number of elements and cables to be managed, creating operational efficiencies for service providers. In addition, MSPs provide integrated transport with switching, circuit grooming, and more efficient use of bandwidth. The multi-service platform can also provision services dynamically. For example, for customers who want more bandwidth, the MSP automatically allocates more bandwidth on the customer’s pipe. MSPs help negate the arduous provisioning normally required with SONET while greatly improving bandwidth utilization. To reduce latency and improve reliability, MSPs and other IP/ATM platforms sometimes use MPLS, or Multiprotocol Label Switching. MPLS adds a small header to each packet that gives such information as destination, preferred route, service level, and how intermediate equipment should route. It expedites packets to reduce latency, helping messages move faster to the destination. With MPLS, packets are routed at the edge (layer 3) and switched at the core (layer 2), which allows switches to operate faster than using look-up tables. MPLS is truly multi-protocol, working with IP, ATM, and Frame Relay

rules can be applied to these messages.BEST PRACTICES ACCORDING TO MICROSOFTConsolidate sites and systems by implementing Exchange 2007 Unifi ed Messaging. All voicemail and fax systems in branch offi ces can be consolidated into one Unifi ed Messaging server. Replacing individual offi ces’ voice mail systems with a single centralized system can drastically lower support and maintenance costs for the voicemail system by eliminating the most expensive component: legacy voice mail hardware.NOTEFor more information, read the Unified Messaging whitepaper at www.microsoft.com/exchange/evaluation/um.mspx. Introduction to Exchange Server 2007 Unifi ed Messaging • Chapter 11 665Fax ReceivingWhen someone sends a fax message to a recipient on the Unifi ed Messaging system, the Unifi ed Messaging server handles the call. Incoming fax calls are answered and routed the same way voice calls are. The only difference is the attachment. Fax messages contain a TIFF fi le as an attachment, which carries the fax message.Outlook Voice AccessOutlook Voice Access (OVA) provides access to a mailbox through any telephone. To gain this access, users dial a subscriber access number that is confi gured in a dial plan. A dial plan is made from rules that determine how calls are routed in the Unifi ed Messaging environment. When a call is made to the subscriber access number, the system will present a welcome message and ask the user for the pin-code to gain access to the mailbox. If authorization is successful, a series of voice commands provides ways to:■ Listen to e-mail and voice mail messages■ Reply, delete, forward, and save e-mail and voice messages■ Listen to appointments and meeting information

Zero-footprint Architecture advantages:• No TMAs required, most flexibility • No footprint requirements except for tower (this equipment may be installed on the top floor of a parking garage without need of a tower) • Lowest power requirements• No special reinforced rooftops• No physical security measures (depending on specific location of equipment)• Minimized nuisance appearanceFigure 5 shows a zero-footprint BTS installed on the top floor of the parking garage at the Littelfuse, Inc. headquarters building in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Figure 5: Zero-footprint BTS installed on the top floor of a parking garage.Another variation on the Distributed BTS concept is the capacity transfer system, in which a single BTS with a digital connection to the BSC (Base Station Controller) is connected to additional tower sites via microwave frequency carriers to extend its footprint coverage (see Figure 6).The RRUs are powered by either a shielded or unshielded dc power cable. Because they are now located on the tower, their exposure to nearby lightning strikes is greatly increased. Therefore, appropriate overvoltage protection must be considered for these new architectures. ITU K.56 provides some basic recommendations for the BTS hut; however, it was issued before the concept of Distributed BTSs started. New efforts are underway in ITU Study Group 5 to define the lightning protection needs of this new architecture. The power supplies and the tower mounted equipment require both over-voltage and over-current protection. Figure 7 illustrates the recommendation for protecting the power supply

Suddenly the contented look on his face froze into a startled stillness. Iknew he was feeling the first savage twinge of the agony that was tocome. He turned his head and looked at me, and I saw suddenly that heknew what I had done."You murderer!" he cursed me, and then his body arched in the middleand his voice choked off deep in his throat. For a short minute he sat, tense, his body stiffened by the agony thatrode it—unable to move a muscle. I watched the torment in his eyesbuild up to a crescendo of pain, until the suffering became so great that itfilmed his eyes, and I knew that, though he still stared directly at me, heno longer saw me.Then, as suddenly as the spasm had come, the starch went out of hisbody and his back slid slowly down the chair edge. He landed heavilywith his head resting limply against the seat of the chair. His right legdoubled up in a kind of jerk, before he was still.I knew the time had come. "Where are you?" I asked. This moment had cost me sixty thousand dollars.Three weeks ago the best doctors in the state had given me a month tolive. And with seven million dollars in the bank I couldn't buy a minutemore.I accepted the doctors' decision philosophically, like the gambler that Iam. But I had a plan: One which necessity had never forced me to useuntil now. Several years before I had read an article about the medicinemen of a certain tribe of aborigines living in the jungles at the source ofthe Amazon River. They had discovered a process in which the juice of acertain bush—known only to them—could be used to poison a man.Anyone subjected to this poison died, but for a few minutes after the lifeleft his body the medicine men could still converse with him. The sub-ject, though ostensibly and actually dead, answered the medicine men'severy question. This was their primitive, though reportedly effective
