Antioxidant and antibacterial activities of Terminalia superba Engl. and diels (Combretaceae) bark extracts

Terminalia superba (T. superba) is locally used for the treatment of various diseases, including diabetes mellitus, gastroenteritis, female infertility, abdominal pains, bacterial, fungal and viral infections. This study aimed to ascertain the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of ethanolic and hydro-ethanolic extracts of T. superba barks. Total phenols, flavonoids, and tannins were measured in the extracts by a spectrophotometry method. The DPPH method was used to evaluate extracts antioxidant activity.

EPSTEIN-BARR VIRUS INFECTION AND CLINICAL OUTCOME IN BREAST CANCER PATIENTS CORRELATE WITH IMMUNE CELL TNF-Α/IFN-Γ RESPONSE

For nearly two decades now, various studies have reported detecting the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in breast cancer (BC) cases. Yet the results are unconvincing, and their interpretation has remained a matter of debate. We have now presented prospective data on the effect of EBV infection combined with survival in patients enrolled in a prospective study.

GENE ACTION FOR DETERMINING YIELD AND QUALITY ATTRIBUTING TRAITS IN BRINJAL (SOLANUM MELONGENA L.)

Therefore, the present study entitled Gene action studies for yield and quality attributing traits in Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) is undertaken to understand the nature of gene effects involved in the expression of a character in interacting and non-interacting crosses. An assessment of these genetic parameters will allow for the development of efficient breeding strategies for eggplant cultivar improvement.

assessment of antioxidant potential and of phenolic compounds of GT pods copy

ASSESSMENT OF ANTIOXIDANT POTENTIAL AND OF PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS OF GT PODS COPY

L pods . Phytochemical screening showed that the antioxidant activity of the extracts depend on the presence of phytochemicals such as, steroids, flavonoids, saponins tannins and alkaloids. Those phytochemicals were present diversely in different solvents. The choice of the extraction solvent is therefore essential because the secondary metabolites of the plant are distributed differently according to their respective polarity in each fraction, thus conferring on them medicinal and therapeutic properties. The study of antioxidant activity by two methods demonstrates that the ethyl acetate and chloroform fractions of Gleditsia triacanthos L pods could serve as potential sources of new antioxidant products. Further research is needed for the extraction and identification of active compounds present in these fractions, which will allow them to be used in pharmaceutical and human health fields. In vivo studies are also needed to understand the involvement of phenolic compounds in the antioxidant mechanism.

Genetic variability studies on yield and yield component traits of soybean

Genetic variability studies on yield and yield component traits of soybean

A study on variability, heritability and genetic advance in 13 genotypes of soybean were carried out for yield and yield component traits. Observations on 11 characters were recorded. Analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among the genotypes for the all the characters. The range was maximum for plant height (39.27- 77.73) followed by number of pods per plant (35.87-61.40). The genotypic coefficient of variation and phenotypic coefficient of variation were high for pod weight per plant (g) followed by seed yield per plant (g) indicate the presence of wider adaptability for these traits in the genotypes studied, suggested the less influence of environment in the expression of characters. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent of mean was observed for days to 50% flowering, plant height (cm), number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, pod weight per plant,100 seed weight, biomass and seed yield per plant indicating additive gene action and the ample scope for improvement in these traits through simple selection.

Bruchid resistance studies in advanced stabilized F6 lines derived from interspecific hybridization between cowpea and rice bean

Bruchid resistance studies in advanced stabilized F6 lines derived from interspecific hybridization between cowpea and rice bean

Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] is an important tropical legume crop, its grain contains about 25% protein and 64% carbohydrate, therefore, it is also called as a vegetable meat. In storage, Callosobruchus maculatus, also called cowpea beetle, cowpea weevil or bruchid, is regarded as the most important and common pest of cowpea both in Africa and Asia. All vigna crops except rice bean are susceptible to bruchids. So in this context in the present study the 100 stabilized families in F6 generation of cross between cowpea and rice bean were evaluated.

Trastuzumab in advanced breast cancer – a decade of experience in Germany

Trastuzumab in advanced breast cancer – a decade of experience in Germany

Patient population and methods of observation
This non-interventional observation study focused on patients with advanced breast cancer (MBC or LABC), fulfilling the selection criteria according to the registered drug label for trastuzumab (Herceptin®) in Germany. All types of pretreatments were acceptable. HER2 positivity was usually defined as 3+ staining in immunochemistry or a positive result of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in case of 2+ staining. Patients were treated in accordance with the routine practice of the respective institution, and findings were prospectively documented on standardized case report forms. There were no re- strictions with respect to individual diagnostic and therapeutic procedures after patient registration, namely concerning the concurrent administration of other anti- neoplastic agents. The patients’ course of disease and treatment were closely monitored through data queries, either until trastuzumab therapy stop for whatever rea- son, or for a treatment period of at least 12 months. Thereafter, key long-term data were regularly retrieved by fax forms until the patient’s death. Adverse drug re- actions (ADR), as defined in the case report form, were recorded according to the regulations of the German drug law. Physicians from hospitals or practices were invited to participate, either during the whole study period or only for parts of it. Database closure was September 2012.

Agronomic management of cowpea for high grain yield and sustainable agriculture in Western Indo-Gangetic Plain of India

Agronomic management of cowpea for high grain yield and sustainable agriculture in Western Indo-Gangetic Plain of India

Rice (Oryza sativa L.)‒wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is the major cropping system in western Indo-Gangetic Plain of India. This system is very exhaustive and there is a need to include a leguminous crop in this system for sustainable agriculture. Field experiments were conducted for two years to explore the possibility of growing cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] and mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] during March/April to June (the period available after harvesting of winter-season crops such as wheat and Brassica and before transplanting and sowing of rainy season crops) and the potential contribution of their crop residues for succeeding crops.

Efficacy of entomopathogenic fungi, Beauveria bassiana against maruca vitrata (Geyer) under laboratory condition

Pathogenecity of entomopathogenic fungi, Beauveria bassiana isolates (Bb111, Bb112, Bb 113 and Bb 114) were assessed against spotted pod borer, Maruca vitrata (Geyer). Bioassays were performed in five different pulse hosts viz., lablab, cowpea, green gram, black gram and pigeonpea against third, fourth and fifth instar larvae of spotted pod borer. Efficacy of Bb 112 was higher irrespective of the pulses tested. The median lethal concentrations of Bb 112 for third, fourth and fifth instar larvae on different pulses viz., lablab, cowpea, black gram, green gram and pigeonpea were in range of 0.10 x 108 to 2. 04 x 108 , 0.14 x 108 to 2.67 x 108 and 0.20 x 108 to 4.80 x 108 spores ml-1 , respectively.
