LETTER WRITING

LETTER WRITING

Letter writingYou can find four basic elements in both formal and informal letters: a salutation, an introduction, body text and aconclusion with signature.SalutationThe salutation is also known as the greeting. Formal letters often begin with Dear Sir/Madam. If you know thename of the person you are writing to, use it instead of the impersonal Sir/Madam.In formal and semi-formal letters, it is common to put a colon after Dear X. In informal letters you can put acomma or nothing at all.IntroductionThe introduction doesn’t have to be particularly long. Explain in one or two sentences the reason for your writing. That’s enough.BodyThis is where you have to outline the information you need to communicate. Be concise but dont forget toprovide all the necessary information. In formal and semi-formal letters, you should also include a formalconclusion. Examples are given below.Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.Thank you for your help and consideration.Closing and signatureYours sincerely is the most common closing used in formal and semi-formal letters. When the name of theaddressee is not known the phrase Yours faithfully should be used. Note that in American English Yours faithfullyis not normally used.In informal letters other closings such as Regards or All the best can be used.Leave some space for your signature and then print or write your name underneath it.Stay on top of your writing! PUNCTUATION MARKS WITH INDEPENDENT CLAUSES

PUNCTUATION MARKS WITH INDEPENDENT CLAUSES

Punctuation marks with independent clausesIndependent clauses can be separated (or connected) in a variety of ways.Full stopWhen both clauses are of equal importance and can stand on their own, we usually use a full stop to separatethem. My toddler refuses to take a nap in the afternoon. He thinks he will miss out on some of the action. Here the two clauses are separated with a full stop because they express complete thoughts and can stand ontheir own.Comma + coordinating conjunctionSometimes we use a comma and a coordinating conjunction. My toddler refuses to take a nap in the afternoon, and I’m afraid that he will soon drive me crazy. Here the two independent clauses are connected with a conjunction and separated with a comma.By using a semicolonIn situations where you use a semicolon, you can use a full stop as well. The semicolon is preferred when theindependent clauses are too closely related. In spite of staying up all day, my toddler refuses to go to bed early; he thinks he will miss something. We can also use a transitional adverb to establish the connection between two independent clauses. Note that atransitional adverb (e.g. therefore, in addition, moreover, as a result etc.) does not connect the two clauses. Itmerely shows the flow of ideas. My toddler kept me awake all night; as a result, I dont feel very well.Instead of the semicolon, we can use a full stop here.My toddler kept me up all night. As a result, I dont feel very well.Dont forget to put a comma after the transitional verb. Also note that a transitional adverb that follows asemicolon begins with a small letter.Stay on top of your writing!
