TOEFL ESSAY WRITING TIPS

TOEFL ESSAY WRITING TIPS

TOEFL essay writing tipsThere are two tasks in the TOEFL Writing section. The first writing task is an integrated task: you will have tolisten to a lecture and read a passage. You must then write a summary of both passages. The second writing task is an independent essay. You have to write an essay of at least 300 words on a giventopic. You will have to write on the topic you are given. No choice is available. TOEFL iBT is a computerized test. You have to type both essays on a computer. If you do not know typewriting well, you must practice on akeyboard before your test. You can cut, copy and paste as you type your essays, but remember that the computer will not check yourspelling or grammar. That means you have to do your homework. Learn the spellings of all words you tend tomisspell.General writing strategiesThe TOEFL writing section has two tasks. It takes about 50 minutes. Here are a few tips for success on theWriting section.Organize your thoughts firstDo not start writing as soon the section begins. Instead, use one or two minutes for organizing your ideas. This isvery important, because few people are capable of organizing their thoughts in their mind as they write. As aresult they will have to edit more.By organizing your ideas in the beginning itself, you will get an outline for your essay. Once you have got theoutline ready, you only need to develop the ideas into paragraphs. However, do not spend more than 2 or 3minutes on an outline. Remember that you will not get any marks for the outline.Use familiar vocabularySome students try to impress the examiner with complex vocabulary. You must not try this stunt if you are notfamiliar with these words. Of course, you have to use academic words in your essay. However, they needn’tnecessarily be obscure.Stay on top of your writing! 3clear your position within this conversation. To do this, you will want to state your position early in thepaper, such as at the end of the introduction, and then sustain this viewpoint throughout the essay. While doing this, to keep the reader engaged, you must also show that you are being fair and reasonableby taking other viewpoints into consideration and conceding or refuting those other viewpoints.Research based essays, for example, should include expert opinions or authoritative examples such asstatistics, research study results, or historical facts to help support your argument and appeal to yourreaders.Appealing to your Readers. Here are some strategies you can use to appeal to your Americanreaders. Use them when appropriate given your particular subject matter, audience, and purpose:Facts: verifiable data or statistics believed as true; the details of an event that happenedOpinions: interpretations of facts such as predictions or analysesAnecdotes: narratives of one time or recurring eventsAssertions: a forceful statement that something is soAllusions: a reference to a literary piece or a cultural or commonly known eventAnalogies and metaphors: direct or indirect comparisons of two or more things or ideasAuthority: the opinion of an expert or famous personVocabulary choices also affect an essay's appeal. The best way to develop your academic vocabulary isto read academic or professional papers and to write and have your work read by native speakers suchas peers or Writing Center Tutors (who are Kaplan University Professors). Native speakers can providefeedback on the areas that may need further clarification due to inappropriate phrasing choices.ELL writers can however write with confidence knowing that Kaplan University is a growing, multicultural, and global educational institution. It is not expected that anyone lose his or her accententirely or compromise any features that make a person’s voice unique. Additionally, the more youwrite for native speakers, the better you will become at making choices that appeal to their sensibilities.Native speakers must do the same as the social and political climate, the hot topics, and even theAmerican audience and what appeals to them changes with the times.

However, many people do not approve of using nuclear power because it is dangerous. What would happen if there were a serious nuclear accident? Radioactivity causes cancer and may badly affect many future generations. Therefore, while scientists are trying to find out other sources of energy, the most important thing for us to do now is to use our natural resources as economically as we can. 15 FOOD ADDITIVES ESSAY

15 FOOD ADDITIVES ESSAY

www.ieltsbuddy.com - Free online IELTS AdviceFood Additives Essay Model AnswerMost foods that are purchased these days in small stores and supermarkets have chemicals inthem as these are used to improve production and ensure the food lasts for longer. However, there are concerns that these have harmful effects. In my opinion, the potential dangers from thisare greater than the benefits we receive. There are several reasons why chemicals are placed in food. Firstly, it is to improve the productto the eye, and this is achieved via the use of colourings which encourage people to purchasefood that may otherwise not look tempting to eat. Another reason is to preserve the food. Muchof the food we eat would not actually last that long if it were not for chemicals they contain, soagain this is an advantage to the companies that sell food as their products have a longer shelflife. From this evidence, it is clear to me that the main benefits are, therefore, to the companies andnot to the customer. Although companies claim these food additives are safe and they haveresearch to support this, the research is quite possibly biased as it comes from their owncompanies or people with connections to these companies. It is common to read reports thesedays in the press about possible links to various health issues such as cancer. Food additives havealso been linked to problems such as hyperactivity in children. To conclude, despite the fact that there are benefits to placing chemicals in food, I believe thatthese principally help the companies but could be a danger to the public. It is unlikely that thispractice can be stopped, so food must be clearly labeled and it is my hope that organic productswill become more readily available at reasonable prices to all.(Words 298)www.ieltsbuddy.com - Free online IELTS Advice
