3490 A TERRIFIC COOK READING COMPREHENSION GRAMMAR ING AFTER EXPRESSIONS WITH TO HAVE 7 TASKS KEYS INCLUDED 3 PAGES EDITABLE

Do you see how slim I am? It’s not on purpose and it’s not mynature either; there’s a good reason for me keeping in shape:Mom. She’s a disaster in the kitchen, and besides beingunable to fry an egg properly, she always causes accidents. Ican’t keep track of all the times the kitchen was on fire (4?5?) because of something weird she decided to do, despite ofour advice to keep out of the kitchen – especially the stove. She doesn’t pay attention to our advice and we have to eat what sheprepares – or at least we eat what we can – so we live constantly onan undesired diet. The last time she tried to prepare roast beef the result was aburning kitchen; Dad could barely save the family and extinguish thefire. When she goes to the kitchen we start fearing for our lives(and stomachs) and thinking of a sickness we’ll fake in order to avoidthe “result”.Despite the bad cook we have at home, our house is always full ofguests for lunch and dinner. I suspect they come just to have funwatching the disasters. And – of course – they want to be the firstto tell our friends what her latest calamity was like.Mark true (T) or false (F) according to the text. You haveto explain orally when it’s false:The girl’s mother is a terrific cook. ( )The girl’s mom tends to cause accidents in the kitchen. ( )The girl’s mother knows how to cook. ( )The girl’s mom gave up cooking. ( )The family asks the woman to stop cooking. ( )The woman keeps cooking and doesn’t listen to her family. ( )They have to eat what she cooks. ( )She set fire in the kitchen more than once. ( )They have guests because they appreciate her food. ( )

English is a(n) language in many countries. II. Reading: A. Read the following paragraph and answer the questions: The city’s main economic activity was cod fishing, the white fish found mainly in the North Atlantic. But from the 1980s less and less fish were being caught and the government effectively banned cod fishing to protect the species. This was a major blow to the region. However, the sea instead provided them with oil and gas reserves to exploit which now is the principal activity. So, what to look for when you are here? Firstly, there are two traditions. These in fact become popular tourist activities. The first is kissing the cod. Remember that fish mentioned earlier? Well, as a visitor you have to kiss one. The second is called the “screech in”. You simply have to drink a glass of Jamaican rum. Screech in English means a little scream of displeasure. You can imagine how this rum tastes. All good entertainment of the locals! Write T, F or DS (True, False or Doesn’t say): 11. The main activity now is cod fishing. 12. No more cod can be found in the sea. Answer the questions: 13. There are two tourist tradition, what are they? 14. If you visit the city, will you do that? Why or why not? B. Cloze reading: Treforest is a small town in South Wales not so far from Cardiff. POLITICS AND THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE 1

POLITICS AND THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE 1

for the sake of their meaning and inventing images in order to make the meaningclearer. It consists in gumming together long strips of words which have already beenset in order by someone else, and making the results presentable by sheer humbug. The attraction of this way of writing is that it is easy. It is easier — even quicker, onceyou have the habit — to say In my opinion it is not an unjustifiable assumption that thanto say I think. If you use ready-made phrases, you not only don't have to hunt about forthe words; you also don't have to bother with the rhythms of your sentences since thesephrases are generally so arranged as to be more or less euphonious. When you arecomposing in a hurry — when you are dictating to a stenographer, for instance, ormaking a public speech — it is natural to fall into a pretentious, Latinized style. Tags likea consideration which we should do well to bear in mind or a conclusion to which all ofus would readily assent will save many a sentence from coming down with a bump. Byusing stale metaphors, similes, and idioms, you save much mental effort, at the cost ofleaving your meaning vague, not only for your reader but for yourself. This is thesignificance of mixed metaphors. The sole aim of a metaphor is to call up a visualimage. When these images clash — as in The Fascist octopus has sung its swan song, the jackboot is thrown into the melting pot — it can be taken as certain that the writer isnot seeing a mental image of the objects he is naming; in other words he is not reallythinking. Look again at the examples I gave at the beginning of this essay. ProfessorLaski (1) uses five negatives in fifty three words. One of these is superfluous, makingnonsense of the whole passage, and in addition there is the slip — alien for akin —making further nonsense, and several avoidable pieces of clumsiness which increasethe general vagueness. Professor Hogben (2) plays ducks and drakes with a batterywhich is able to write prescriptions, and, while disapproving of the everyday phrase putup with, is unwilling to look egregious up in the dictionary and see what it means; (3), ifone takes an uncharitable attitude towards it, is simply meaningless: probably one couldwork out its intended meaning by reading the whole of the article in which it occurs. In(4), the writer knows more or less what he wants to say, but an accumulation of stalephrases chokes him like tea leaves blocking a sink. In (5), words and meaning havealmost parted company. People who write in this manner usually have a general
