IELTS-PRACTICE-TESTS.comFirst Solar looks likely to continue to grow. Last month it signed a memorandum of understanding withChina to install two gigawatts' worth of panels in Inner Mongolia-a place with plenty of space. That isenough to power 3 million homes. Installation is due to begin next year and finish in 2019. That and otherprojects should consume all its output for several years to come.First Solar's rivals are much smaller. But technological advances may yet catapult one to the fore, says SteveMilunovich, an analyst at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. First Solar makes its cells from a chemical calledcadmium telluride. But firms such as Nanosolar, which is building factories in California and Germany, believe that a combination of copper, indium, gallium and selenium known as CIGS will prove cheaper toproduce on a mass scale. Researchers at the University of California, meanwhile, hold out great hopes for

IELTS PRACTICE TEST 06 READING ACADEMIC TEST

The Dutch and their IceTHE stolid, clog-wearing, cheese-making Dutch are not your obvious Romantics. But when Holland gainedindependence in 1813, after decades spent fighting the French, a resolute high-mindedness that was thrifty, intimate, idealistic and in its way peculiarly Dutch, finally settled on the Low Countries. These good people had no time for the high Romanticism of the Germans, who hankered after the lancesand legends of the Middle Ages, or the leafy ideals of the English with their love of daffodils and the bucolicgreenery of the Lake District. For their Romantic inspiration the Dutch turned back to their own golden age,the 17th century, with its enduring characteristics of domesticity and diligence. Nineteenth-century Dutchpastorals show windmills and waterways, red-cheeked boys and little yellow hatchlings. Spring, summer andautumn are sometimes the backdrop. But one after the other, artists such as Jan Jacob Spohler, NicolaasJohannes Roosenboom, Francs Breuhaus de Groot and Andreas Schelfhout, turn their attention to the icylandscape of winter.Nothing epitomises the ideal of Dutch 19th-century life so much as ice-skating on winter’s frozen waterways.Market days and jolly parties bathed in a pinkish winter light all happen on ice, where dogs and childrencavort among men in tall hats and women in fur muffs enjoying the small pleasures of daily life. That thesecanals might be transformed in summer into stagnant ditches rank with mosquitoes and malaria, or evenaltogether overwhelmed by the ever-present sea nearby, is a reality that never intrudes.IELTS-PRACTICE-TESTS.comDutch cityscapes show a similar moderation. Tall buildings gather, hugger-mugger, along the edges of canals.Ruined gateways and cracked roofs radiate timelessness. The human figures on the pavements are small andrarely give expression to extreme emotions. They call their dogs, tie their shoelaces, shush their teethingbabies and look for reassurance to the striking of the town clock. Within, Hubertus Van Hove’s Amsterdamorphan girl, in her characteristic red and black uniform, with white cap and white apron, prepares a simplemeal. The Bible has the last word and the clock stipulates a life of domestic continuity.Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, a modest citizen of Cleves, father of five daughters, was a master at portrayingthe contrast between humble humanity and the greatness of creation. Regarded as the father of DutchRomantic landscape painting, he counted among his clients King Willem II of the Netherlands, KingFriedrich-Wilhelm IV of Prussia and Tsar Alexander II, which goes some way to explaining why there is a

ON KY NANG READING CUA IELTS (TEST 1)

TEST 1.Reading passage 1:You should spend about 20 minutes on Question 1-15, which are base on Reading passage 1 below:Question 1-5:Reading Passage 1 below has 5 paragraphs (A-E). Which paragraph focuses on the informationbelow? Write the appropriate letters (A-E) in Boxes 1-5 on your answer sheet.Notes: Write only ONE letter for each answer.1. The way parameters in the mind help people to be creative.2. The need to learn rules in order to break them.3. How habits restrict us and limit creativity.4. How to train the mind to be creative.5. How the mind is trapped by the desire for order. The creation mythA. It is a myth that creative people are born with their talents: gifts from God or nature. Creativegenius is, in fact, latent within many of us, without our realizing. But how far do we need to travelto find the path to creativity? For many people, a long way. In our everyday lives, we have toperform many acts out of habit to survive, like opening the door, shaving, getting dressed, walkingto work, and so on. If this were not the case, we would, in all probability, become mentallyunhinged. So strongly ingrained are our habits, though this varies from person to person, thatsometimes, when a conscious effort is made to be creative, automatic response takes over. We maytry, for example, to walk to work following a different route, but end up on our usual path. By thenit is too late to go back and change our minds. Another day, perhaps. The same applies to all otherareas of our lives. When we are solving problems, for example, we may seek different answers, but, often as not, find ourselves walking along the same well-trodden paths.B. So, for many people, their actions and behaviour are set in immovable blocks, their minds cloggedwith the cholesterol of habitual actions, preventing them from operating freely, and thereby stiflingcreation. Unfortunately, mankind’s very struggle for survival has become a tyranny- the obsessivedesire to give order to the world is a case in point. Witness people’s attitude to time, socialcustoms and the panoply of rules and regulations by which the human mind is now circumscribed.

F Traditionally retailers measure "footfall", as the number of people entering a store is known, but thosenumbers say nothing about where people go and how long they spend there. But nowadays, a ubiquitouspiece of technology can fill the gap: the mobile phone. Path Intelligence, a British company working with theMassachusetts Institute of Technology, tracked people's phones at Gunwharf Quays, a large retail and leisurecentre in Portsmouth-not by monitoring calls, but by plotting the positions of handsets as they transmitautomatically to cellular networks. It found that when dwell time rose 1% sales rose 1.3%.G Having walked to the end of the fruit and vegetable aisle, Basingstoke's hard-core shoppers arrive atcounters of prepared food, the fishmonger, the butcher and the deli. Then there is the in-store bakery, whichcan be smelt before it is seen. Even small supermarkets now use in-store bakeries. Mostly these bakepre-prepared items and frozen dough, and they have boomed even though central bakeries that deliver to anumber of stores are much more efficient. They do it for the smell of freshly baked bread, which makespeople hungry and thus encourages people to buy not just bread but also other food, including frozen stuff.© IELTS-PRACTICE-TESTS.com , All Rights Reserved. This content is for your ow n individua l study only. But the wafting bread aroma shows smell can usefully be stimulated too, says Simon Harrop, chief executive of BRAND sense agency, a British specialist in multi-sensory marketing. In the aisle by thelaundry section he suggests introducing the smell of freshly laundered sheets. Even the sound of sheetsbeing folded could be reproduced here and contained within the area using the latest audio technology. TheAroma Company, which Mr Harrop founded, has put the smell of coconut into the shops of Thompson, aBritish travel agent. Some suntan oils smell of coconut, so the scent is supposed to remind people of pastholidays. The company even infuses the fresh smell of citrus into a range of clothing made by Odeur, a
